Power Saving in Wireless VoIP 6.829 Project

چکیده
This paper reviews existing power management techniques on wireless LAN and verifies the effects of different power management techniques applied to the case for VoIP over WiFi through experiments. Voice communication imposes timely constraints such as short time interval between packets and the need to be always listening for potential incoming connections. It also poses opportunities related to people being silent during voice communication to listen to the other party. As a result some of the existing power save techniques in the MAC layer do not apply to the VoWiFi scenario and one needs to take an integrated approach to reducing power consumption on the VoWiFi device by reducing the packet size during transmission through efficient codecs, header compression, silence detection, and MAC power save mode that adjusts to the voice traffic pattern.

Wireless sensor networks(WSN) have unique properties that distinguished them from other wireless networks and have special challenges. Not-chargeable, not-changeable and limited power supplies of sensor nodes is the most important challenge of this networks, and if the power supply of node expired, a part of data maybe lost. Because of the importance of covers in wireless sensors, in this work ...

The Voice over IP (VOIP) and the IP based internet services are revolutionizing the way wireless networks are developed. The VOIP services make use of the internet backbone rather than the traditional circuit based networks (PSTN and the wireless voice services). The advantage provided by the VOIP technology over the traditional circuit based networks is that both voice and data signals are tra...
